New fabric for the kitchen

This is the new fabric I chose for the kitchen. Remember my husband could not stand the other fabric I chose? He absolutely hated it and I called it my happy fabric! Oh well, time to start over. I found this new fabric with much softer colors that we both like.

new fabric 2

I found this fabric at Jo-Anns’s on sale for 50% off and then got 25% off at checkout! Now that’s a deal I like!

There are still pumpkins on the table but I am determined to finish making the window panels before I start decorating for Christmas.

new fabric

I’m thinking that I may actually like the new softer fabric better!

cafe curtain

Here’s the link to the post about café curtains in the kitchen. I can’t believer that I have to start making curtains all over again, these colorful ones just needed to be hemmed.

snow

We woke up to this scene this morning, making it seem so cozy and warm in the house with the fireplace warming us as we had morning coffee. It felt like the perfect day to decorate for Christmas, but not til I get these curtains done!

Are you finished decorating? What have you done so far?

Thank you to all who commented with kind words and wishes on the passing of my father. It’s hard to think he won’t be calling me to take him to the store or on errands but I am so thankful his suffering is over.

Café curtains in the kitchen

When I was young café curtains were in almost every kitchen. Gradually they were replaced by mini-blinds, wooden blinds, roller shades and bamboo shades.  I had 1 inch wooden blinds with a valance in my kitchen, but like everything else, after so many years I wanted a new look.  Café curtains are the replacements!

cafe curtain

I’ve been noticing that café curtains are being used again and decided to make some for my kitchen. Here’s a peek of the fabric. I haven’t sewn them yet, I was just testing out different lengths. I bought this fabric last year with the intention to use it for cushion covers and a window treatment in the kitchen but over the year I started rethinking that….I just wasn’t crazy over the fabric anymore. Ugh…..why does that happen….I hate when that happens!

photo(3)

But I decided to use it anyhow and now I’m starting to like it again. It looks great with the new wall color and my Annie Sloan painted pumpkins.

z cafe curtain

source This was my inspiration for café curtains and a shelf above my kitchen window. Speaking of kitchens, on Monday the trim will start to go up around my upper cabinets.

These sunny yellow curtains are hung just above the sill.

These cute curtains were made from napkins, no sewing involved. Another no sew method, café curtains would be easy to create using heat tape. They use so little fabric you could change the the look often or for every season.

I’m starting to paint the kitchen cabinets now so the work is progressing. Can’t wait til it’s done!

What are you working on? Got any projects going?

Happy Fall!

decorating for Autumn

Fall is in the air. The nights are definitely getting cooler now and soon the days will be shorter. Are you ready to decorate for Fall? Here’s some of my fall décor from previous years to give you a little inspiration.  Think apples, colorful leaves in shades of red and gold, pumpkins of all sizes and shapes and the smell of a fire in the fireplace. (Click on photos to be taken to original post.)

porch planter

I got this old wicker planter several years ago at a yardsale for 5$ and it has served me well. It’s the perfect size for my small front porch. This is from 2009.

apples

Embrace all that the season has to offer by decorating with leaves, twigs and apples. I used berries from a tree in the backyard and pushed apples onto twigs to add to this arrangement.

5 minutes to craft a burlap pumpkin. This project went viral last year and was pinned over and over.Open-mouthed smile It’s got to be just about the easiest project ever!

burlap pumpkin

A smaller version of the original, I added a key embellishment on this blue pumpkin. The blue burlap was from the thrift shop and I’ve never seen any since.

collage leaves

Autumn leaves crafted from felt are great for the Thanksgiving table or for a banner hanging from your mantel. I sewed these to mimic the veins in a real leaf. Use real leaves for a template.

A pile of twigs becomes a wreath. This was another quick project that went viral. It could be used as a frame or on a table as part of a centerpiece.

W2011_09_26_2099

On the porch last year, I created this arrangement with twigs and branches from the yard and added in some faux elements.

orange fireplace autumn

Last year’s mantel screams fall in bright orange.

orange mantle

I added sticks in with the faux leaves.

MT2011_09_26_2133

Yarn wreaths and felt flowers were a hot trend last year. This wreath was the centerpiece on the mantel.

qq2011_10_03_2187

Hot cider, I love the smell as much as the taste! Cinnamon and apples are one of my favorite combinations.

b

Apples are a big part of Fall and I do love them!

c apple pie crumb top

If you want a great apple dumpling recipe try mom’s apple dumplings or a crumb top apple pie. Delish!

I hope you’re a little bit inspired. Are you ready to decorate?  Have any projects in mind? I’ve been thinking about decorating the front porch this year, trying to come up with something…..that’s coming soon.

It’s hard to see summer come to an end because that means winter is coming soon.  That’s ok, I enjoy all the seasons. Send a kiss

The redecorated Family room Reveal

In January we started work on painting our family room, adding board and battens and redecorating. I’m happy to say the room is done, well, about 99% done. The golds and reds of the 90s are gone and we’ve got a new lighter look.

Here’s the tour and all the projects it took to get to this point.

First we painted the top walls palladian blue, an historic color from Benjamin Moore and painted the bottom a premixed white. Next we put up the board and battens.family room

We ordered a new couch from Hickory Craft and got our comfortable chairs and ottoman slipcovered.  The wire basket from TJ Maxx is a good place to throw newspapers or pillows.

couch coffeetable board and batten

The window panels came from Target and the pillows from TJ MAXX. I love that store for home accessories. They always have the best stuff.

mannequin

The clock got a makeover with homemade chalk paint and I brought in the lamps from the living room. The mannequin came up from the basement.

family room stenciled table2

This sweet little Annie Sloan chalk painted table with a Royal Design stencil is used in the room, where ever it’s needed.

cece-caldwell-chalk-paint 2

The bombe chest was painted with CeCe Caldwell chalk paint.

stone fireplace

The black lantern is from Pottery Barn outlet, silver trays and horses head are thrifted pieces and the pallet sign is a DIY project.

urn, chalk paint chair, antlers

The side chair got a new look and the urn came from a thrift shop. I like how the antlers look in the urn.

plate wall

I created a free form plate wall that wraps around the corner, above a repurposed yardsale dresser that now holds the tv. A vintage stool is from an antique store and rope trim was added to a plastic planter. And yet another pillow from TJ Maxx. I found the galvanized box in my husband’s stash.

slipcover chair ottoman

Here are our slipcovered chairs with an old shutter from the re-build it store. Check out my cool old rotary phone.

2012_07_22_6006

I love how the slipcovers turned out with their little pleated skirts. My slipcover gal does a great job. Slipcovering is one project I won’t do, I think I would get so frustrated and wouldn’t finish, so I’m happy to have someone else do it.

black lamp shade

My husband’s black lamp is old and really heavy. I was going to look for a new one but I think I’ll keep this one. It serves us well because it has two light bulbs, one on either side.

familyroom coffee table restoration Hardware knockoff

And finally our Restoration Hardware coffee table knockoff. I think it turned out great and I can stash some baskets or wooden boxes underneath for added storage.

The red and gold is gone, but it took a ton of projects to get this room done.  I still want to tweak it a little and add in a few more things on the walls and in some empty spots, but I want to keep it light and comfy looking.

a family room1

Here’s a before of the clock and bombe chest that were made over and chairs that got slipcovered.

afmrm2

Here’s the giant tv armoire that got moved to the basement and the chair that was made over.

When we started this project we also painted the kitchen and powder room. Yesterday I painted the vanity with ASCP and I still want to make some shelves for in there. In the kitchen I’m still working on the top cabinets. The weather has been too darn hot to work outside and I’ve been invaded by zucchini so I’ve slowed down on projects, but it’s getting there. Smile

So what do you think? Will board and batten be on its way out soon and define the early 21st century as a decorating trend? Or will it stay around a while? Will blue/greens be replaced by a new darker color?

Thanks for visiting! Debbie (((xx)))

Painting the powder room and decorating updates

Remember the harlequin pattern in the powder room? It’s gone! It’s been replaced with Benjamin Moore’s Wythe blue from the same color strip as Palladian blue in their historical colors.

Harlequin powder room circa 2007. Even though painting this pattern was a lot of work, after 5 years I need a change.

a sink 1

I’d describe Wythe blue as green-blue-grayish.

wythe blue

Palladian blue is in the little hallway off the kitchen, the kitchen and family room. I’d describe it as blue-green. It looks grayish in the pictures, but it’s really not. I’m adding bead board wallpaper and chair rail in there too.

palladian blue

We have been painting fools around here. The ceiling in the kitchen is not done yet, but when it is, this paint party will be over for a while.

I’m waiting to get the new couch before I add much to the family room. Right now there are just a few things on the mantle.

The price for reupholstering our chairs was ridiculous, so I’m thinking about plan B, which is probably slipcovers. It’s getting there.

Soon I’ll be moving to Word Press and Google friends connect will no longer be available to WP blogs. I hope you will follow me on twitter, facebook, Pinterest, Google+ and rss feed in a reader.

Thank you! I appreciate you coming by so much!

Redecorating the family room and Board and Batten

The board and batten project is finally finished. It wasn’t a difficult project but it does seem like an unending one once you start caulking. We continued the board and batten around the wall into the kitchen, because that seemed like a logical place to stop. The kitchen and family room are now Benjamin Moore palladian blue and it’s time to start decorating. Fun!

board and batten 1

You can see the old Laura Ashley gold in the kitchen.

2012_02_15_3732

Now it looks like this. I’ve said before that I like green much better than blue, but this color grows on you. It looks a bit gray in this picture and in different light it can appear blue or green. I’ll put a drum shade or lantern above the table.

board and batten 2

It’s about time the reds and golds in the family room are gone. This room has been taupe, gold and now palladian blue. For us, that’s about a new color every 5 1/2 years. That’s not so bad, is it? How often do you redecorate?afmrm2

In the past year the faux greenery has gone, along with some of the accessories. Our comfortable old white couch is going. We’ll miss it, but it’s really starting to show it’s age and creaks when you sit on it.

eeefr

There are a pair of chairs and an ottoman and they’ll be recovered with a neutral fabric, maybe one of these. 2012_02_15_3730

The couch we ordered is from Hickory Craft and should arrive in about 6-8 weeks. It’s a popular style with nail head and turned legs, but this one is a little different because it has a high back.

RenderImage.aspx

It will look so different. I’m excited about the changes! I still have to figure out window treatments and tables but that’s part of the fun.

I’m still painting trim in the kitchen but that will be done soon, then I’ll start looking for fabrics and light fixtures.

In a couple weeks I’ll be moving to Word Press and Google friends connect will no longer be available to WP blogs. I hope you will follow me on twitter, facebook, Pinterest and rss feed in a reader.Smile  Thank you! I appreciate you coming by so much!

Creating ombre dresser and shabby lampshade

Inspired by this sweet ombre dresser, I decided to makeover a little dresser that I already had.  Ombre is a French term meaning shaded. It’s usually a multicolored stripe, with colors graduating from light to dark.

Consept C (27) nettNorske InteriorBlogger

If you think this picture looks familiar, it’s because I posted it before in this post about painting fabric on a chair, in the green guest room makeover.

2012_01_29_3547

To paint the dresser, I used the same paint that I used for the chair project. In the plastic milk container is the chair paint that already had textile medium in it. I mixed up lots for the last coat, because I didn’t want to run out of paint for the chair. I used that paint, with some white latex to achieve the different shades for the dresser.

ombre colors

It’s not the best paint job but it still looks pretty cute.

ombre chest

The lampshade got a makeover too. The original shade on the lamp was a tan color and I knotted strips of plain white fabric around it. That same fabric was used to create drawer pulls. The top drawer had 4 knobs but I like this look better.

lampshade cotton strips2

Tomorrow I’ll reveal the whole room redo.

Feature Friday, Emerald Cove

Today’s Friday feature is Michelle’s blog, Emerald Cove, a journey to find the simple joys in life. Living near Lake Michigan, she always has the most beautiful pictures of the lake and its romantic lighthouses.

Her home has a casual and relaxed coastal style, created by the use of organic elements from the beach, like shells and driftwood.

These pictures of her dining area, with a faux fireplace, are what first attracted me to her blog. I love the airiness and light feel, and she seems to achieve this soft look effortlessly.

The hutch was painted a pretty gray to complement her white pottery.

Just beautiful! The living room mantel changes with the seasons. Using white shutters on the hearth masks the darkness of the fire box.

I could relax right here in this serene corner of her living room.

What a great little step ladder! Soft aqua accents remind me of the sea.

She and her husband created a lovely faux mantel in their dreamy bedroom. There’s that cat again, it knows how to pick a tranquil spot for relaxing.

She worked her magic in her daughter’s room, again using that beautiful aqua. It’s such a calming space now. You can see the before and after on her blog.

sharkroom

With darker colors in her son’s room, she still manages to give it a coastal cottage feel. She created the planked wall and makes many elements she uses for decorating, like the driftwood fish above the bed and the wooden buoys on the floor.   I wonder if that’s the same cat?

sunset7

Some people instinctively know their signature decorating style and create it easily. Michelle is one of those people! While I love her style and admire her ability to create it, achieving it, for me would be difficult, because I’d always be adding more color and accessories, destroying the understated elegance.

So, I’m content to be inspired by Michelle’s home at Emerald Cove.

Be sure to stop by and pay her a visit.

Painting fabric on a chair Part 3

Painting the fabric on this chair is finally finished, at least as far as I’m concerned. Some of the nap of the fabric didn’t take the paint as well as other areas. But it is about 25 years old, so I guess that’s as good as it gets. The back of the chair looks best because there wasn’t any wear on the fabric.
qqqqqfabric painted chair
You can see the areas  I’m referring to where the fabric is worn. I’m happy with how it looks though. It’s a great color in this green room which I’ll be sharing soon. Today I actually spray painted some accessories for the room outside, because it was so warm.
qqqqq2012_01_20_3460
You can see I used lots of paint and textile medium!
Here’s how I did it;
first I sprayed the fabric with water to really wet it down. Next, I mixed together equal parts acrylic paint and textile medium, thinned it with water and painted the chair in many thin coats, letting it dry thoroughly before adding another coat. I sanded any spots that felt stiff or rough between coats and that really made the fabric soft.
The trim and upholstery tacks got painted too. I was going to take off the trim and add new, but decided not to in the end. I think it looks ok as it is. Painting the legs and wood trim white really makes the color pop.

Here are Part 1  and  Part 2  in case you missed them.
This is the basic tutorial from Kristy at Hyphen Interiors, that I used and there are lots of examples of painted fabric and tips on this site.
So to sum it up I’d say, it’s ok for an accent chair in a guest room, but probably wouldn’t work on a full room of furniture or a chair that you like to curl up in. That’s just my opinion.
Smile
When this room is finished I’m going to move right along to the next project; it might be board and batten, bead board wallpaper, plank ceiling or painting the kitchen, family room and powder room. I’m an a roll!

Painting fabric on a chair, Part 2

Part 1 is HERE if you missed it. The chair after 2 coats of paint has streaks that I’m hoping will disappear after more coats. The fabric has some spots where the nap was worn down and I’ve tried sanding, but that didn’t help, but sanding does a great job of softening the fabric.

xx2012_01_17_3433

I sand like an obsessed person after each coat of paint is dry and it’s only those few arrow marked spots that give me problems. The raised spots with rough fabric are harder to paint. I don’t know what caused the fabric to be like that.

seat2012_01_18_3445

Several coats of paint later and this is how she looks. The paint is wet, that’s why it looks blotchy. I’m going to paint the wood white.

q2012_01_18_3439

Here’s the fabric on the back of the chair. You can see how nice the nap is, and it’s soft.

back2012_01_18_3451

I think I’m going to like it, flaws and all, just because she’s so pretty!

dresser2012_01_18_3455

This little dresser is getting a makeover too. Maybe an ombre pattern like this cute little dresser.

While working on this room I got sidetracked working on 2 projects in the basement. More about that later, nothing décor related, mostly maintenance and housekeeping

The chair is getting there! Yeah

Painting woes, Picking the right color

Have you ever had trouble picking paint colors? It’s not easy. Too many green undertones or blue undertones and “Help, I don’t know how to do this.” That describes me to a T. I always have trouble picking that perfect color.

green2

And to add to the confusion, I have many, many more color swatches.

I taped samples that I thought would work on the wall and studied them with the blinds open and closed. I came back several times throughout the day to study them again and picked a color. Then I moved the samples to another wall and taped them in a different pattern and  repeated the process. Each time I selected the same color, so that’s how I did it.

If I were painting one of the bigger areas of our home I would buy the sample paints and paint the wall to actually see how the color looks in the room.

gg

This is a small guest rooms that I’ve been wanting to paint forever. I wanted a limey green, definitely not a minty color. The color I chose is Aloe Vera from Lowe’s Olympic paints.  It’s bit brighter than I wanted but I like it, I think. The Olympic paint was great to work with, no odor and one coat was all it needed.

Today I’m working on another project for that room, painting a chair, the whole chair including the fabric. I found several tutorials so wish me luck because I’m going for it!

Front porch Christmas decorating 2011

Welcome to our home!

This year the porch is decorated with a trio of wreaths on the door and greenery filled urns flanking each side.

Using sparkly silver ribbon on the wreaths and touches of spray snow on the greenery in the urns makes it feel like a winter wonderland.

1aa2011_12_14_3200

The greenery in the urns was clipped from shrubs and trees in our yard, and a few sprigs of greenery are tucked into each faux wreath.

dd2011_12_14_3193

For height in the urns, I added a few longer twigs and sprayed on a little fake snow.

dw2011_12_14_3195

I added a few pinecones, snowflakes and silver ornaments.

aa442011_12_14_3183

Creating the trio of wreaths was a bit trickier than I imagined and I’ll explain in another post.

I get asked a lot about the iron piece on the stone wall; it’s actually supposed to be a door mat, but because it’s iron, it’s hard to stand on. So, it hangs on the wall instead.

I’ve been doing some baking and will post a few recipes soon.

Hope you’re enjoying this holiday season!

How I created this year’s mantle/Christmas crafts

Let’s start with the focal point, the center frame of the mantle.
A piece of plywood I found in the basement fit perfectly in the frame, I didn’t even need to cut it. I used Mod Podge to glue on hymnal pages, then put a thin coat of Mod Podge on top and allowed it dry to over night.full2011_12_10_3120

hn2011_12_11_3168
The letters came from Michael’s and were spray painted white, then outlined with a little dark brown paint. I added some Martha Stewart glue and glitter. Next I glued the letters onto the center of the hymnal pages.
qq2011_12_12_3179

Next project, the white rose tree. I will not roll a felt flower again for a long, long time. I’m estimating I rolled about 200 for this project!
Beth from Home Stories A 2 Z has about the best tutorial for creating rolled felt flowers HERE.
rose tree
I created a cone from an old yardsale sign I found in the garage. The cone got covered with a piece of scrap white fabric, because I didn’t want any  brown cone to show. Then I started creating roses from felt squares, gluing larger roses on the bottom and gradually becoming smaller toward the top. When I was finally finished I rejoiced!
twigtree
The twig tree was a quick project. Again, I created a cone, this time from a cereal box, and glued on twigs of different lengths, adding pieces to fill in empty spots. Spray paint and that’s it’s!
I think these twig trees would look great left natural too, on a piece of a wide branch for a base.

And last, the glittered pinecones I dried and created HERE.

Christmas decorating with Peacock feathers. Inspiration

If you want to make a unique decorating statement at Christmas, consider using peacock feathers. Their colors are the perfect complement to the soft blues, grays and aquas that are so popular now.

Simple felt and burlap napkin rings for Thanksgiving

The simple beauty of these felt leaf shaped napkins rings inspired me to recreate the look. Leaf shapes cut from felt and sewn with contrasting thread for veining is a quick and easy project.

After cutting strips of burlap, I glued them to wooden napkin rings I already had.

napkinrings2011_11_13_2899

A clipart program provided leaf shapes for patterns. Some leaves I cut from felt squares and some from felt fabric, which isn’t as stiff as the squares.

leafM2011_11_13_2909

You could glue the leaf to the napkin ring or not, either way looks good.

;eafO2011_11_13_2902

I like the look of the plain burlap ring with the leaf on the plate.  Write a name on the leaf for a place card.

;eafO12011_11_13_2921

The oak shapes, cut from felt fabric aren’t as stiff, but I like the way they lay on the napkin ring mimicking a real leaf.

leafALL2011_11_13_2917

You could even skip the sewing and use a marker for the veining and just place felt leaves on the table here and there for decoration. That is; if you have room for turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, gravy and felt leaf decorations! Laughing out loud

Tomorrow is the everything Thanksgiving linky party. Please come back tomorrow and link up! I sure would enjoy seeing your decorations and projects and hearing your turkey story disasters, like not realizing the oven is on broil while trying to roast a turkey! Snow. On Saturday we got about 8 inches of heavy, wet snow. It just didn’t feel right. The trees were still filled with colorful leaves and it wasn’t very cold, so why were we getting snow dumped on us?

White impatiens sheltered under a tree, hadn’t yet been hit by frost.

Our garden reminded me of a fairy tale snow garden.

The day before this crazy weather, the news had been warning of the coming storm, so I snuck into our neighbors yard to clip a few branches!  shhhh, it’s a secret. Could I get arrested for sneaking a few branches?

I wasn’t ready to say good bye to the pretty leaves and wanted to make a loose arrangement for the dining room. I speared apples with skewers and added them to the vase.

Then I decided to sit here and have some cider and a snack and watch the snow falling outside. Enjoying Autumn inside, while watching a snow storm outside was a new experience for me.

I even dug out this old embroidered placemat.

Autumn is just too pretty to leave us so soon!

Pears would have worked in this arrangement and adding fruit is an easy way to celebrate the season. It looks so pretty too.

Our neighbor was waving at me from his window while I was sneaking. those branches.Who me?

P is for Pumpkin, O is for Orange

Splashes of orange are popping up everywhere and not just on pumpkins. Shades of orange from peach to rust have always been on my list of favorite colors. Guess that’s why, back in the 80s I was so into the combination of peach and green.

Lately I’m noticing pops of orange in decor. Walls, pillows, rugs, you name it. Is it a new color trend? Will I be brave enough to paint my walls orange? As much as I love it, I don’t know if I’m ready for that! But I can still ohhh and ahhh over touches of orange.

Like these stairs, now that’s a bold, happy look in an entry.

This rug is gorgeous! The color and pattern are perfect.

And so is this one with the complement of orange draperies.

Speaking of draperies, just look at these beauties. I love this look.

Greys are so popular now and this coral headboard against dark grey walls is swoon worthy!

Here’s a bedroom with orange, aqua and dark brown. I could sleep here. I could live here! Love that zebra rug too.

Bright orange walls create deep contrast against white board and batten. You either love this or hate it! It’s just a tad too bright for me.

Here’s another orange space with a touch of black and white zebra print in a vase.

And yet another room with an orange, brown and blue palette paired with a zebra print rug.

So now that I’ve shared my obsession with orange, have I inspired you? I hope it’s popularity lasts. I’ll be so happy to be seeing it more and more!

Coming up next is a post about our star sighting in NYC!  Woo hoo it was fun!
